This Holy Week, my family and I are doing our traditional Visita Iglesia. On Lent, we go on pilgrimage to visit different churches near and far. It is my favorite part of Lent ever since I was a little kid. I want my kids to love going on Visita Iglesia too because I want them to feel closer to God the way I feel closer to God when I do this. That’s why I always say that on Lent, we remember the sacrifices Christ has done for us and in doing so, we offer some sacrifices ourselves.

Visita Iglesia is a spiritual activity I get to enjoy with my family but going to different churches can be tiring, especially for my high-energy kids! After visiting so many churches, we’re all usually so tired from all the walking and the driving that we end up eating an unsatisfying meal.

As a mom, I always make it a point to make a checklist of all the things my kids will need when we go out and one thing that’s always on top of my checklist is a baon that they can eat. My kids can never go on road trips without their baon! It gets harder though looking for food that they’ll like but won’t spoil easily. I want them to eat something healthy as well as delicious too!

Good thing there’s San Marino Tuna Paella that’s so easy to prepare especially for someone who has to plan the entire family trip! The best thing about this isSan Marino Tuna Paella is already a complete meal that has protein, vegetables, and Spanish paella rice that can easily satisfy my kids’ cravings and hunger right after a day spent going to different churches. You can turn this into a different recipe as well.

For example, I make Tuna Paella Sushi using this. And it’s so fun and easy to make.

You'll need a few essential tools for making sushi:

Bamboo rolling mat (makisu)
Sharp knife

Ingredients:

1 can of San Marino Tuna Paella
Nori sushi sheets

1 cucumber, cut into thin spears
1 carrots, cut into thin spears
1 mango, cut into thin spears (you can also use avocado)
Lettuce
Imitation crabmeat

1) Place the bamboo rolling mat on a cutting board so the bamboo strips are running horizontally to you. Then place a sheet (or a half sheet) of nori.

2) Spread a thin layer of San Marino Tuna Paella over the nori. Leaving a small space at the top edge of the nori so you can seal up the roll.

3) Add your ingredients toward the center of the San Marino Tuna Paella-covered nori. Don't overpack it. If you're making a roll with the rice on the outside, simply turn the nori over, placing it rice-side down on the rolling mat. Then add your ingredients to the top of the nori.

4) Gently lift the bottom of the mat up and over the sushi. Press and shape the ingredients into a tube. Roll with pressure so you get a firm roll.

5) Roll until just an inch of nori shows at the top. Seal the edge of the nori with a little cold water. Firm it up by squeezing the mat around the roll until it feels uniformly snug. Be careful not to squeeze so hard that the ingredients are smashed or come oozing out the sides. It's a fine line; with practice you'll get the feel of it.

6) Slice the sushi roll in half with a sharp knife on a cutting board. Then cut each half into thirds -- so you have 8 pieces of sushi. To get a nice clean cut, wet the knife with water each time you make a slice.

7) Line the slices of sushi up on platters or sushi plates. Enjoy!

It’s a great meal to share with the whole family! Now, I don’t have to worry about bringing baon for our outings.

These days, I have been super active – travelling in different places, participating in various fun runs, on top of my daily shenanigans. I am really enjoying the perks and savoring the experiences, but there are some drawbacks, too.

You all know how close Japan is in my heart. Just recently, I was in Japan for four nights for an exciting campaign. The country's leading manufacturer and one of my favorite brands, Wacoal, made all this possible. And I couldnt ask for more. Domo arigatou gozaimasu!

Such a memorable experience to be with the bloggers I’ve been looking up to all these years and looking forward to work with. They have been my inspiration in the “blogging” world, and I remember how I wished to get to work with them someday and get to do what I love best. Dreams really do come true!

As we start our journey, we were greeted by nice and gentle cold weather when we arrived in Kansai Airport on March 18.

Both the weather and my excitement made me feel the coldness of the breeze. From Osaka, we went straight to Kyoto where our first set of events would happen. Ibis Styles Kyoto Station Hotel received us graciously and I love its strateuc location because it is just in front of Kyoto Station.

Wacoal generously prepared a welcome bag for all of us filled with gifts produced by Wacoal Corporation Group of Companies. It has goodies which include some of my personal favorites:

• Omamori, which means amulet or charm. This Omamori is for “good health” from Tenryu-ji Temple in Kyoto. This is totally handmade by the hardworking artisans in Japan.

I knew we’re off to a great Day 1!

We woke up early to meet up with our tour guide, Ichiko. She has an inspiring personality as evident in her Wacoal scarf that made her standout. She shared that she runs in the Tokyo Marathon and got the scarf from finishing it. I hope to have one of those attractive scarfs too! Obviously, #EverybodyLovesWacoal.

Our first stop was the Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion).

You could see how amazing this place is. Although it is not my first time here, I'm always astonished by its beauty like the first time I've been here. It's the same feeling all over again. But a beautiful one.

We were given some time to capture photos at Arashiyama and Togetsu-kyo bridge before heading for lunch. It's also a great time to appreciate Japan’s culture.

Wrapping up the first half of the day with some Japanese cuisines was heart warming. The delicious treat was provided by Okunoniwa restaurant which caters delectable meals for locals and travellers alike.

It's never a bad time to have ice cream! Even if the weather is cold, it never bothered us anyway. Who could say no to matcha ice cream?

We can't miss the meditation and tea ceremony at the Kodai-ji temple. I always look forward to this experience because this is one of the core and essential flavors of the Japanese culture. One must do meditation from time to time because it doesn't just provide peacefulness in your mind but it heals the soul as well. The tranquility provides you a new perspective and fresh set of eyes about life and surroundings.

The Japanese tea ceremony (Cha-no-yu), which is also called “Sadou” or “Chadou”, is one of the traditional Japanese cultural activities that help people enjoy tea with a calm feeling due to the unique philosophy and procedures involved.

Joyo means Japanese yam (Japanese sweets)

Eating sweets will make a green tea even more delicious, so we finish eating sweets before drinking powdered green tea. Then, the taste of the tea will be milder.

Using a traditional bamboo whisk, rapidly stirs the mixture to create a bright green paste, adding additional hot water and whisked to produce a thick, rich matcha tea.

Though it rained, we were still eager and thrilled during our tour. We were all on the move for sightseeing and exploring every corner on foot. We didn't care about getting tired nor getting wet in the rain. What we have in my mind is the fun we are having.

Kiyomizu-dera Temple

Kiyomizu-dera sits on Mt. Otowa in eastern Kyoto. Reaching the temple is in itself a bit of an uphill battle. It can get pretty tiring to climb the sannenzaka (road built specifically to get to temples or shrines) hills, but the souvenir shops lining the streets made it even more exciting for me.

I was able to lift it alone :) Yay!

As soon as you enter, you'll notice this rusted metal pole. It is called tetsushakujō, and it is a staff made of iron and tin. It was a gift presented to the temple by religious followers who train and study in the mountains, and it weighs over 90 kg.

It's too heavy for most people to lift alone, but it is said it brings good luck to the one who manages to lift it. At the base of the tetsushakujō is a pair of takageta, traditional Japanese footwear. Being able to successfully walk in a pair of these is also said to bring good luck.

Standing 131 meters tall just across from Kyoto Station, Kyoto Tower (京都タワー) is Kyoto's tallest structure and a rare modern iconic landmark in the city famous for its ancient temples and shrines.

We went back to the hotel at around 5:00 p.m. to prepare for dinner at Donguri restaurant. It was a perfect get together to call it a day. The lovely Liz Lanuzo of Project Vanity helped us reflect on things, places and persons to be thankful for to this kind of experience.

Yes, travelling is definitely both rewarding and enriching. Need I say more?

Do you know someone who’s depressed? How can you determine that a person has depression? How do we deal with depression or with a depressed person?

These are just some of the many questions we may have already began thinking of and then let go due to answers that seem to be very difficult to understand. Or perhaps we stopped thinking about the moment we doubt if it’s even real. Well, it is real. It is happening everywhere.

Unfortunately, depression continues to be a leading cause of disability and death in many countries around the world. Many people think that depression is not an illness; it is widely dismissed as just a negative feeling that one eventually snaps out of. However, it is one of the leading causes of suicide. We must understand that it is simply because a depressed person is weak. Most of the time, what they show is just the tip of the iceberg. It is vital that we at least try to understand what’s underneath.

Did you know?

• More than 300 million people are currently undergoing depression, up by more than 18% from 2005 to 2015.

• In the Philippines, an estimated 3.3 million Filipinos are suffering from depression. Only 1 out of 3 who suffers from depression will seek the help of a specialist and one third will not even be aware of their condition.

Because of this, Globe Telecom created Hopeline 2919 in 2012, a 24/7 toll-free prevention hotline. In its first year alone, 14,000 calls have been received and most of the calls were related to issues on depression, suicidal thoughts, and relationship problems.

Personally, I believe that Hopeline 2919 is a stepping stone to our understanding of depression, and eventually battling it. Most people with this illness are afraid to talk about it because of the stigma that currently prevails in our society about it. As a result, they become more depressed and they tend to keep their true feelings to themselves. Worst, it becomes the end of living.

I see Hopeline 2919 as a string of hope that people who are suffering from depression can hold on to when they find no courage to talk to their friends or families. Although, I still believe that as friends and families, we must be very sensitive and sentient when we are faced with this. Moms and dads must spend time and truly listen to their children, and make them feel secured and loved. Friends should be very patient and must not judge.

At one point, I myself was depressed. I didn’t want to talk to anyone for quite some time. Now that I have a family of my own, I acknowledge when my kids feel down or if my husband seems to be going through something. We’ll never know until we try reach out. In the family, we make sure that we discuss our problems together to be emotionally healthy. There are no big or small issues – just issues. The key is to talk about it no matter what. As parents, we have a big responsibility and opportunity to ensure our children’s emotional state.

In our home, I always make sure that every corner smells good and fresh. That’s just one of the many ways I express my love to my family. It gives such a comforting feeling. I personally love the sweet smell of flowers and fruits, or the aroma like that in spas. Very relaxing! I have tried so many ways to do this – oils, candles, sprays, diffusers, etc. But what I’m about to share to you is the best for me.

More than the colors and its overall look, I was instantly captivated by the scent. It was like someone showered the room with perfume. I didn’t realize it was the smell of the air freshener.

The event introduces the newest Glade Peony and Berry Bliss and the Glade Automatic Spray. Oh my gosh, I couldn’t wait to use it in our room! Peony and Berry Bliss is now my favorite variant from Glade. Super worth it!

The Automatic Spray was also quite a revelation. I was not a fan, and almost didn’t notice it at first. However, it’s really an interesting piece.

I’ve been to Japan numerous times and aside from ramen, sushi, and all that good stuff, they excel in making sweets too specifically cheesecakes and cheese tarts!

There’s something about Japan that makes it a dream destination for many—the perfect spring weather, the beautiful but short-lived sakura and its delectable cuisine— rich pork broth of ramen, fresh sushi, melt-in-your mouth wagyu and delightful cheese tarts, foremost of which is Japan’s cult favorite, BAKE Cheese Tart

One of the most delicious brand I tasted was BAKE Cheese Tart. I still remember clearly how good it was and how I wished it was available here in our homeland. There was something about it that makes it stand out from the others.

Fast forward to today, BAKE Cheese Tart now exists in the Philippines and has opened its first store at The Podium! Its priced quite reasonably for its quality.

The taste is very similar to the ones I’ve had in Japan. If you didn’t already know, BAKE CHEESE TART’s freshly baked cheese tarts have their origins in Kinotoya, a long established French confectionery store in Sapporo, Hokkaido. Their cheese tarts are composed of four kinds of cheeses from Hokkaido and France.

The taste is magnificent. The heavenly creamy cheese center is out of this world. Your taste buds will surely dance out of pure happiness.

They serve their cheese tarts in three ways; warm, chilled, and frozen.

Warm cheese tarts have liquefied centers. The cheese oozes and flows like a molten lava while the crust is somewhat vulnerable but nicely toasted.

The chilled version on the other hand is like how your typical cheese tart is served. It’s creamy and has a soft cheese center.

The best in my opinion is the frozen cheese tarts. It is extremely good. So, in the event that you decide to buy a box, be sure to store it in the freezer to have a nice cold treat which is perfect this summertime.

Like I’ve mentioned before, BAKE Cheese Tart is now here in the Philippines. They currently have three stores which are located in The Podium, Power Plant Mall, and SM Mall of Asia.

I spent an afternoon with other mommies of good, wholesome fun with Friso at the Wholesome Table in BGC on Thursday, February 15.

Hosted by Joy Mendoza, creator of TeachWithJoy.com and a believer of Friso Four, the “Friso Four LockNutri Workshop” served as a delightful post-valentine treat which included herb gardening activity and bento-making.

Des Labii of Bento Mommas, on the other hand, showed mommies how to level-up their baon-making skills. She implied that not only does bento-making encourages picky eaters to finish their food, but it allows mommies and kids to bond as they prepare the meals together – and at the same time, make sure that they use only natural ingredients. A mother of two boys, her experience as a dialysis nurse in NKTI prompted her to be a vigilant mother when it comes to food preparation, health and nutrition.

After a sumptuous buffet of healthy eats prepared by The Wholesome Table, we received our LockNutri Starter Kits and as they welcomed us to the Friso Four Community with a pledge.

SMDC certainly knows how to treat their homeowners. Last March 24, they organized a pyromusical viewing party at Shell Residences’ roof deck lounge.

It offered a clear viewing spot for the Philippine Pyromusical Competition at the Seaside Boulevard of the SM Mall of Asia.

We all know that the Mall of Asia Complex has grown to become one of the country’s emerging central business districts that has successfully incorporated entertainment, commercial, and business lifestyles all into one hub.

Within this hub, exists Shell Residences.
